Breast MRI test is an additional, complementary diagnostics together with mammography and ultrasound. The main benefit being no radiation to sensitive tissue, something that has great value, particularly for younger women.
MRI of the breast has also become more widespread as a screening tool instead of conventional mammography. In younger or breastfeeding women where dense glandular (breast) tissue proves mammography difficult or painful.
Breast MRI is reliable, pain-free and highly accurate even in women with implants or previous surgery scars.
The scan itself requires the patient to lay face down (prone) with the body supported.
The indications for a breast MRI can be to evaluate the condition of breast implants in situ, known or suspected breast tumours and other lesions.
Recently studies show the possibility to use MRI with Gadolinium-based contrast for Sentinel Node detection as an alternative to the standard mapping used today.
Contrast (dye)
Some symptoms and illnesses can be hard to detect even on a MRI scan and require injection of dye (contrast) before or during the scan.
It is particularly helpful in the following conditions:
- Tumours
- Inflammation
- Blood vessels
- Distinguishing between scar tissue and normal organ tissue
The injection is considered very safe for most and you will complete a safety questionnaire detailing your medical history before. The contrast agent (dye) is Gadolinium based and most of it is removed by your kidneys within the next day.
