Do you have implants?
MRI is used to detect defects on the implant capsule, ensuring there is no rupture of the implant or damage on the implant surface. Damaged implants potentially carry a risk of the implant material leaking into the tissue surrounding the implant.
A Breast MRI can detect implant rupture or compromised implant membrane (implant wall).
Breast implants are not a contraindication for an MRI scan with the exemption for tissue expanders. If you are unsure, your doctor will be able to advise you on your options.
Contrast (dye)
Some symptoms and illnesses can be hard to detect even on a MRI scan and require injection of dye (contrast) before or during the scan.
It is particularly helpful in the following conditions:
- Tumours
- Inflammation
- Blood vessels
- Distinguishing between scar tissue and normal organ tissue
The injection is considered very safe for most and you will complete a safety questionnaire detailing your medical history before. The contrast agent (dye) is Gadolinium based and most of it is removed by your kidneys within the next day.
