MRI technology is based on a computer creating images from signals sent to and from the object being scanned using strong magnetic fields and radio waves.
The scanner itself can look a little different from clinic to clinic, where you might come across a unit looking like a tunnel open on both ends (this is called “closed MRI Machine”) or as a table with the magnets located above and below the patient table (“Open MRI Machine”).
Some “Closed MRI Machines” have a wide bore, meaning the opening (“bore”) where the patient table slides in to has a wider than normal width.
Open MRI units can sometimes be used vertically, allowing for standing/sitting scans to be done. This can be useful in assessing spinal alignment as your spine would be in a natural, weight bearing position during imaging. Standing MRI units can also be a solution for patients unable to fit into a closed MRI or cannot have one done due to claustrophobia.
